Cruising Resources and Information for Sailors

Somebody Asked . . .

"Can I race my cruising boat . . . but not too seriously?"

Races and Rallies

"[Liveaboards learn] the art of adapting to Nature, accepting one's part in it, and to a degree submitting to it. This works. The other way around does not."

Ventilation

Deck Vents, Hatches, Ports and Windows (with their Insect Screens and Window Shades) plus Fans to move air around the boat can make a big difference belowdecks, particularly in stopping Condensation.

Hot-Weather Sailing

For Hot Weather Sailing if natural ventilation with Fans and Vents isn't enough, a cruising boat may need Air Conditioning, even Boat Insulation, to keep the crew from melting.

Cold-Weather Sailing

After warm Clothing and Foul Weather Gear, Cold-Weather Sailing calls for Heating the Boat, maybe even Insulating it, to keep the crew warm and Condensation at bay.

Soundproofing

A cruising passage can be one of the highest decibel experiences you will have: engine and drive train noise, the wind in the rig, plus waves drumming on the hull. Soundproofing can help.

Clothing

Good Boat Clothing, Boots and Shoes, Foul Weather Gear, and Eye Protection can make or break a cruise, and the right Sea Bags and Damp-proof Stowage can make or break your clothing.

Personal Hygiene

With limited water, more primitive Showers, and creative Laundry solutions, Personal Hygiene can be a challenge on a cruising sailboat.

Seasickness

Anyone who has suffered from it, knows that Seasickness can be more crippling than a broken leg. But there are lots of preventatives and remedies.
